1. Hike to Hang Múa Cave + Viewpoint

Best for: The best panoramic views in Ninh Binh
Time needed: 1–2 hours
Effort level: Hard (500 steep steps)
Cost: $4 USD
Priority: ⭐ Must do

If you do nothing else in Ninh Binh, make it this. Hang Múa (Mua Cave) offers one of the most iconic views in Vietnam.

The steps are steep but worth every drop of sweat for the panoramic views over the Tam Coc rice fields.

Getting there: Rent a bike or join a guided tour which includes Hang Múa at sunset.
Best time to go: Early morning or sunset for fewer crowds.

TOP TIP: Ignore the “fake” parking attendants who try to stop you before the entrance — just keep biking until you reach the official parking area.

2. Take a Boat Ride Through Trang An Scenic Landscape

Of all the things to see in Ninh Binh, this UNESCO-listed river system is the most famous. It’s a peaceful two-hour journey through caves, temples, and dramatic limestone cliffs.

Choosing Your Trang An Boat Route

You’ll have three routes to choose from — each with slightly different scenery. Route 3 includes caves and the famous Skull Island film set from King Kong.

When you buy your ticket, you’ll receive a pamphlet that allows you to make your choice while waiting in line.

Once you’ve made your decision just let the attendant know your choice when you reach the front of the line, and then wait until there are enough people for your selected route to board.

TOP TIP: Come in a group of four if you prefer a private ride.

Honestly, all routes seemed similar, but we chose Route 3 because it features cool caves and offers a view of Skull Island from the film King Kong: Skull Island, which other travelers highly recommended.

Cost and Tipping

The cost is 250K VND per person plus a tip. While you may read reviews about tour guides demanding tips, we didn’t experience this, though we offered a tip without prompting.

These women row 3-6 people (yes, they row) around for over two hours and absolutely deserve a tip for their hard work.

If you can’t afford to support locals by paying both the ticket fee and a tip, consider postponing your visit.

Trang An vs Tam Coc Boat Ride

While the Tam Coc boat ride is more central, Trang An is quieter and more scenic.

The scenery is more stunning, the ride is longer, and although it can still get crowded, you can beat the rush by arriving right when tickets open at 7:30 AM.

We also heard that the rowers can be much pushier for tips – almost to the point of harassment – on the Tam Coc rides, while that is not the case at Trang An.

3. Cycle Around the Ninh Binh Rice Fields

Best for: Exploring freely at your own pace

One of the best free things to do in Ninh Binh is simply hopping on a bike and riding through the countryside.

(Avoid your best shoes after rain; mud adds to the charm!)

4. Go Bird Watching at Thung Nham Bird Valley

Best for: Nature and wildlife

If you’re after quieter places to visit in Ninh Binh, Thung Nham Bird Valley is an underrated gem.

We cycled here as well, which worked out perfectly since the ticket booth is about 2km from the park entrance.

Once inside, we spent around two hours biking through the park, taking in the beautiful scenery, and hopping on the boat tours. Entrance costs 150K VND ($6 USD) and includes all boat rides within the park.

⏰ Best time to visit: early morning or between 4 PM and dusk. We took the boat tour around 4:30 PM and saw flocks of birds returning to the wetlands for the evening.

5. Climb the Beautiful Bich Dong Pagoda

Best for: Easy temple visit with great views
Time needed: 45–60 minutes

Bich Dong Pagoda is a must-see attraction in Ninh Binh. Built into a limestone cliff, it has multiple levels connected by steep stone steps and small caves.

Each tier of the pagoda reveals stunning views over the surrounding countryside, making the climb well worth it.

Entry is free (10–20K VND/ less than $1 USD for bike parking).

6. Vietnamese Farmer Experience with Buffalo Rides, Caves & Countryside Life

This hands-on experience lets you step into the daily life of a Vietnamese farmer in the countryside around Tam Coc.

You’ll try traditional rice planting, learn fishing techniques, and even ride a water buffalo (an animal deeply connected to Vietnam’s farming culture).

You’ll also explore Buffalo Cave, swim near a waterfall, and take a short cooking class using fresh local ingredients.

7. Eat Your Way Through Tam Coc’s Best Restaurants

Because food is one of the best things to do in Ninh Binh. Here are our top picks:

Hoang Cuisine Tam Coc

Prices are relatively expensive here (like, $6 USD for a specialty dish), but the food quality is top tier, so we think its worth the extra cost.

Try the green papaya salad with beef, the beef and pork rolled in wild betel leaf, and the bánh xèo (crispy Vietnamese pancake).

Khoa Dung Restaurant

For a fun dining experience, sit in the front seating area facing the street and enjoy some people-watching.

We recommend the yogurt coffee (don’t knock it ’til you try it!), along with the pork fried rice and tofu with tomato sauce. If you’re feeling adventurous, try their goat meat dishes, a local specialty in Ninh Binh!

Father Cooking Restaurant

We stumbled into this gem when we couldn’t find another spot we had saved and were on the brink of hanger – no regrets! This is one of the most affordable places in Tam Coc.

Julia ordered the fried tofu stuffed with meat (definitely add the tomato sauce for just an extra $0.40 USD), while Jess got tofu with vegetables.

Aroma Indian Restaurant

This was the best Indian food we had in Southeast Asia.

We love paneer but stopped ordering it in Laos and Cambodia because it often turned out to be just tofu. That was not the case at Aroma Indian – we ate here twice and both curries we tried were incredible.

Nhật Linh

Stop here on your way to Bich Dong Pagoda or Thung Nham Bird Valley. You’ll notice a little restaurant first on the path, but opt for the chairs facing the rice fields and mountains instead.

Brick Coffee Shop

Imagine airy, industrial vibes transformed into a modern coffee shop. Brick Coffee Shop is not only cute but also offers quality coffee, cakes, and smoothie bowls.

We settled in here for a few hours to get some work done, and many others were doing the same.

The Wi-Fi is good, there are fans upstairs to keep cool, and the atmosphere is super peaceful and quiet on the edge of town.

8. Learn Traditional Embroidery in Văn Lâm Village

Best for: Unique cultural experience and meaningful souvenir
Time needed: 2 hours
Effort level: Easy
Cost: ~$25 USD
Priority: Worth it (especially if staying 3+ days)

This small-group workshop takes place in Văn Lâm Embroidery Village, where you’ll learn traditional Vietnamese embroidery from a local artisan in a craft that dates back over 700 years.

You’ll learn stitching techniques, create your own design, and leave with a handmade souvenir like a handkerchief or tote bag.

The experience is beginner-friendly, all materials are included, and the small group size means you get personalized guidance throughout.

9. Visit Cúc Phương National Park

Best for: Hiking and wildlife

Vietnam’s oldest national park is about 1.5 hours from Ninh Binh. You can spot ancient trees, tropical wildlife, and rare primates like the Delacour’s langur.

If you’re visiting Tam Coc between late May and July, don’t miss the Lotus Garden to see stunning lotus flowers in full bloom!

Adjacent to the lotus fields, Wild Lotus Cafe and Restaurant offers a cozy spot to relax – make sure to try their highly-rated coconut coffee while you’re there.

There are a TON of other cafes with amazing views to hang out in Tam Coc as well.

11. Get Pampered at a Local Spa or Salon

One of our favorite budget-friendly activities in Southeast Asia is treating ourselves to some pampering, and our time in Ninh Binh was no exception.

You can get your hair washed and dried for about $3 USD and your nails done for a super reasonable price as well. Stop by any salon along the main road in Tam Coc for a relaxing hair wash and head massage.

For an extra treat, we recommend Sense Spa Tam Coc for a massage and herbal bath; you’ll leave feeling peaceful and rejuvenated.

12. Visit Hoa Lư Ancient Town at Night

Best for: Learning about Vietnam’s history
Time needed: 1 hour

While Hao Lu is often suggested as one of the best things to see in Ninh Binh, some say it can feel underwhelming unless you’re a history buff.

Instead, we recommend visiting at night when the historic architecture truly comes to life.

Stroll through the ancient town, admire the illuminated monuments, and let your imagination transport you back hundreds of years.

Day Trips to Ninh Binh

While it’s technically possible to visit on a day trip from Hanoi, we don’t recommend it. There’s just too much to see!

How to Get to Ninh Binh

Getting to Ninh Binh is a straightforward journey from any nearby destination, with buses being the best and most popular option.

From Hanoi to Ninh Binh

Buses take around two hours and often drop you in Tam Coc. If not, a short taxi ride for roughly 160K VND connects you from the city.

Trains from Hanoi to Ninh Binh also run regularly, though the bus is faster and simpler.

From Ha Long Bay (or Cat Ba Island) to Ninh Binh

Getting to Ninh Binh from HaLong Bay or Cat Ba is very easy as well. The bus takes only 4 hours and includes the 30 minute ferry ride off the island.

We booked our ticket through a local agency and were dropped very close to our homestay in Tam Coc. You can also very easily book online for instant confirmation.

The Best Time to Visit Ninh Binh

Ninh Binh hosts numerous festivals, with most of the major ones happening in March. Click here for a full list.

While these events typically don’t drive up accommodation prices, they do make transit busier, so it’s wise to book your bus and train tickets in advance.

For ideal weather, plan your visit between November and April, when the cooler, drier conditions make for a more comfortable experience in Ninh Binh.

The rainy season here spans from May to October, with August and September bringing the heaviest rain, frequent storms, and occasional typhoons, making travel during these months challenging.

How Long to Stay in Ninh Binh

While we don’t recommend day trips if you can spare a few days, we suggest spending at least three days in Ninh Binh.

We stayed for five days and easily could have stayed longer. Ninh Binh is the perfect place to unwind and just enjoy Vietnam, so if your itinerary and visa allow, consider extending your stay a bit.

Tam Coc Lotus Flower Homestay

We stayed here and couldn’t recommend it more. Our host, Lin, was incredibly accommodating and prepared a delicious breakfast for us every morning.

Her lush garden is filled with whimsical mini figurines, and the rooms are spotless. This place offers amazing value for your stay.

Hostels

The Banana Tree Hostel

The most popular hostel in Tam Coc – and for good reason. The vibe is fantastic, the property is beautiful, and it’s located right in the heart of town.

For around $11 USD per night, it offers everything you could want in a hostel.

Trang An Freedom Hood

This is an ideal option if you’re open to staying a bit outside of town. The views are incredible, and the guesthouse itself is lovely.

With both dorms and private rooms available to suit different budgets and preferences, and bikes for rent to get into town, it’s a great pick!

Mid-Range

Trang An Retreat Ninh Binh

Trang An Retreat is a fantastic mid-range option if you prefer a more secluded experience, away from the main tourist spots, with serene mountain views.

Enjoy the pool, take a short walk to the Trang An boat tour, and savor the delicious on-site meals. Some scooters and bikes are also available for rent to help you explore more of the area.

High Budget & Unique

Lotus Field Homestay

Set on a lotus field, as the name suggests, and surrounded by beautiful karst mountains, the property offers private bungalows with a surprising amount of seclusion for the mid-range price.

We’ll definitely stay here next time we visit Ninh Binh.

Emeralda Resort Ninh Binh

If you’re looking for a high-end option while still being close to the action, Emeralda Resort is perfect. Enjoy waterside views and luxurious touches in the rooms for a truly relaxing experience.

How to Get Around Ninh Binh

Most attractions in Ninh Binh and Tam Coc are easily accessible by bicycle, motorbike, or taxi.

Renting a bicycle is our top recommendation for exploring the area; even without being super fit, we managed to check off three or four must-see spots in one day.

While we usually wouldn’t suggest renting a motorbike in Vietnam (the traffic can be WILD, iykyk!), this region is calm enough that it should be safe if you have some motorbike experience.

The only place we took a taxi to was the Trang An boat ride, which cost about 100K VND ($4 USD) for a round trip.
