Transportation to Phong Nha vs Ninh Binh
Both Phong Nha and Ninh Binh are accessible by bus and train, but there are some major differences in journey length and arrival times.
How to Get to Phong Nha
Conveniently located between major cities in Vietnam, there are bus connections to Phong Nha from both the north and south, making it a fairly easy place to visit.

Hanoi to Phong Nha
Getting to Phong Nha from Hanoi takes about 10-12 hours, whether you choose the bus or train. The bus is generally the cheapest option, and often includes hotel pick-up and drop-off.
If you’d rather take the train, you can do so from Hanoi to Dong Hoi. You’ll then need to take a one hour bus or taxi to Phong Nha. Total travel time is still 10-12 hours and the train costs more than the bus.
👉 Most trips start in Hanoi — use our guides on where to stay in Hanoi and how to spend three days in the city so you’re perfectly positioned before heading onward to Ninh Binh, Phong Nha, or the rest of your Vietnam route.
Hue to Phong Nha
The fastest and most affordable way to get from Hue to Phong Nha is by bus, with a travel time of 4-5 hours.
A train to Dong Hoi, followed by a connecting bus or taxi to Phong Nha, is also possible, but takes longer (5-6 hours) and is typically more expensive.

Hoi An to Phong Nha
An overnight bus is the most convenient and affordable way to travel from Hoi An to Phong Nha. The journey takes 7-8 hours.
🏮 Stopping in central Vietnam along the way? Use our 3 day Hoi An itinerary to plan your time in the lantern-lit old town before continuing north to Phong Nha.
How to Get to Ninh Binh
Getting to Ninh Binh from nearby destinations is simple, with buses being the most common and convenient way to travel.
Hanoi to Ninh Binh
The bus from Hanoi to Ninh Binh is a breeze – just a quick two-hour ride. If you’re planning to stay in Tam Coc instead of Ninh Binh city, keep an eye out for buses that make a stop there.
Now, if your bus happens to terminate in Ninh Binh city, no sweat! You can easily grab a taxi from there to Tam Coc.
There are usually plenty of taxis waiting when the buses arrive, and the ride should cost you around 160,000 VND (which is about $6.50 USD).
While you could technically take a train from Hanoi to Ninh Binh, we’d personally recommend sticking with the bus for this particular trip. It’s just a bit more straightforward and convenient, in our opinion.

Cat Ba Island to Ninh Binh
Getting to Ninh Binh from Cat Ba is super easy. The bus ride is only about four hours, and that even includes the 30-minute ferry trip off the island.
We booked our tickets through a local agency, and they dropped us off really close to our homestay in Tam Coc, which was great.
But you can totally book online too, and get your confirmation right away, if that’s more your style.
Da Nang to Ninh Binh
Getting the train is probably the most popular choice as it’s comfortable and picturesque. It’s pricey if you’re on a backpacker budget though! You can book the 14-16 hour train ride online.
If you want to save money, take the 18-20 hour bus journey between Da Nang and Ninh Binh. There’s plenty of companies you can book through online.

Accommodation in Phong Nha vs Ninh Binh
Where to Stay in Phong Nha
🏆 OUR PICK – Little Rock Homestay
We opted for a bit of peace and quiet and chose to stay at Little Rock, which is just outside of town. It was perfect! The homestay is right on the river, so we could swim and soak up the sun whenever we wanted.
The rooms are fantastic – way better than we even expected. Everything felt brand new and fresh, with tons of natural light. It was obvious they’d recently renovated.

To make the homestay even better, the owner was incredibly helpful. She set us up with a motorbike so we could get into town for dinner and explore Phong Nha National Park.
We were even picked up by motorbike at 3 AM (!!!) when our bus from Ninh Binh rolled in and gave us a tent to sleep in so we didn’t have to book an extra night or sit outside until morning.

BUDGET PICK – Central Backpackers Hostel
This hostel is in a prime spot – it’s where most buses arrive and depart from Phong Nha, so it’s super convenient.
We didn’t actually stay there ourselves, but we heard from other travelers that the staff is really friendly and helpful. Apparently, they’re great at organizing trips and suggesting things to do around Phong Nha.
Honestly, the biggest draw for us (and almost made us book a stay) was the huge swimming pool with those amazing mountain views.
Plus, they have a free BBQ on Sundays and a bunch of activities going on in the evenings.
Where to Stay in Ninh Binh
🏆 OUR PICK – Tam Coc Lotus Flower Homestay

We stayed at this place and absolutely loved it. We can’t recommend it enough! Our host, Lin, was amazing – so accommodating, and she made us a delicious breakfast every single morning.
Her garden is gorgeous, filled with these cute little figurines, and our room was spotless. Plus, it was such a great value for what we paid.
BUDGET PICK – The Banana Tree Hostel
This hostel is the place to be in Tam Coc – and it’s easy to see why. The atmosphere is awesome, the property is gorgeous, and it’s smack-dab in the middle of everything.
At around $11 USD a night, it’s got everything you could possibly want from a hostel.
Dining Options in Phong Nha vs Ninh Binh
Honestly, there’s no losing when it comes to food anywhere in Vietnam. That being said, Phong Nha and Ninh Binh both had some amazing food options.
Food in Phong Nha

Phong Nha has some of the most delicious, underrated food options we tried in all of vietnam. Some of the highlights include:
- Crab pho served in the front yard of a village home
- Fresh fried spring rolls made to order literally in front of us
- Caramel tofu (yes, that’s right – and it was INCREDIBLE)
These truly unique dishes were a real highlight of our few days in Phong Nha.
Check out our full guide to Phong Nha for where to find these spots with Google Maps linked.

Food in Ninh Binh
Much to our surprise, Ninh Binh has some of the most diverse options for food out of everywhere we visited in Vietnam. Ninh Binh also has a ton of cafes to hang out in or get some work done if you need to.

Some highlights from the food we tried in Ninh Binh include:
- Papaya beef salad (still thinking about this dish)
- Ground beef stuffed tofu with tomato sauce
- The best Indian food in all of Vietnam (from our experience)
- Yogurt coffee (don’t knock it til you try it)
🍲 There is so much good food in Ninh Binh that we literally wrote a post on all of our favorites!
Things to Do in Phong Nha vs Ninh Binh
Highlights of Phong Nha
Enjoy the Surrounding Caves
There are a number of different caves to explore around Phong Nha. These are the three main stops for visitors:
- Paradise Cave: Imagine walking a kilometer into the longest dry cave in Asia, surrounded by these incredible rock formations, all lit up in vibrant colors.
- Dark Cave: Zipline across the river, followed by a swim into the cave where a mud bath and exploration by headlamp await. You can reach it via scooter or a local tour.
- Phong Nha Caves: A tranquil boat ride along the Son River will bring you to the cave entrance, where you can explore its impressive stalactites and stalagmites.
To make the most of your time, many tours combine Dark Cave and Paradise Cave in one tour. We recommend this highly-rated tour to visit both.
Explore Nature
We did no prior research before showing up at Phong Nha Botanic Garden (oops). Turns out that these “gardens” are a protected natural area with trails, waterfalls, and swimming holes.

Hike to Gio Waterfall for stunning views, or wander the peaceful trails past diverse plants and small waterfalls. Entry is about 40,000 VND, and it’s 12 km from Phong Nha village.
You can also tour around Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park through its lush jungle, explore caves, and learn about the park’s rich history and biodiversity on a guided day tour.
Tours range from 1,200,000–1,500,000 VND, with pick-ups available from most accommodations in Phong Nha.
Chill at Mooc Spring
Take a dip in the beautiful turquoise water, wander across the bamboo bridges, or just chill out surrounded by those incredible limestone cliffs.
Entry is 80,000 VND, and it’s a 30-minute ride from Phong Nha town. There are small food stalls nearby for snacks and drinks.
Paddle Board at Ozo Park Ecotourism Zone
If you’re looking to get away from the crowds, definitely check out Ozo Park. It’s a bit of a hidden gem along the main motorbike loop, and it felt like a total local hangout – we didn’t see any other tourists!

Admission is 200,000 VND (about $8 USD), and it covers a bunch of activities: zip lining, paddleboarding, swimming, kayaking, and even a treetop walk.
We spent a few hours kayaking and paddleboarding, just chilling out and enjoying the peace and quiet. It was the perfect way to relax before heading back to town for dinner.
Feed Some Ducks at Duck Stop
Imagine feeding ducks, getting a hilarious “duck massage,” and then enjoying a free pancake with coffee or juice, all thanks to a welcoming local family.
It’s only 10 km from town, or a tuk-tuk ride costs around 50,000 VND each way.
Highlights of Ninh Binh
Bich Dong Pagoda
This historic pagoda is built right into a limestone mountain and has multiple levels, with beautiful views and caves to explore.

Each tier of the pagoda offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside, making the climb totally worth it.
It’s free to enter, but there’s a small fee for parking your bike (around 10-20K VND).
Learn a Local Craft
Joining a local craft workshop is one of our very favorite activities when traveling. Head to the Văn Lâm Embroidery Village to learn about Vietnamese embroidery and try your hand at stitching.
We didn’t do this during our trip, but it’s absolutely on our list for next time.
Trang An Boat Ride
If you only have time for one thing in Ninh Binh, this is it – it’s the most iconic spot around.
When you get there, you’ll have a choice of three different boat routes.
Just tell the attendant which one you want when you get to the front of the line, and then hang tight until they have enough people for your chosen route.

We chose Route 3. It goes through some cool caves, and you get a view of Skull Island from the King Kong movie.
They give you a little pamphlet when you buy your ticket, so you can check out the routes while you’re waiting in line.
The women rowing the boats of 3-6 people work hard, and they totally deserve a tip. If you’re not able to cover both the ticket price and a tip, you might want to think about visiting another time.
Supporting the local community is a big part of responsible travel, in our opinion.
Hang Múa Cave + Viewpoint
The climb up to Hang Múa Cave is a little bit of a trek – the steps can be a bit uneven – but trust us, the views from the top are absolutely incredible.

You can see for miles and miles across the Vietnamese countryside, with all the different shades of green and the rice paddies stretching out below.
We’d really recommend doing this tour at sunset. Just picture this: 360-degree views of Ninh Binh as the sun goes down. It’s pure magic!
Bird Watch at Thung Nham Bird Valley
This place is seriously underrated – definitely one of the best things we did in Ninh Binh!
We actually cycled there, which was perfect since the ticket booth is a bit of a ways (about 2km) from the park entrance.
Once we got inside, we spent a couple of hours just biking around, soaking up the gorgeous scenery, and hopping on the boat tours.
The entrance fee is 150,000 VND (around $6 USD), and that covers all the boat rides inside the park.
TOP TIP: If you’re into birdwatching, the best times to go are early morning or late afternoon (around 4 PM until dusk). We hopped on a boat tour around 4:30 PM and saw tons of birds flying back to the wetlands for the night. It was amazing!
Cycle Around the Ninh Binh Rice Fields
Cycling around the rice paddies outside Tam Coc was one of our absolute favorite things we did in all of Vietnam. Exploring at your own pace is the best way to experience it.
You’ll quickly realize that some of the coolest things to see in Ninh Binh are the little everyday moments of local life.
Want to learn even more about how Ninh Binh locals live? Join this tour to meet local water buffalo, learn traditional fishing methods, help a farmer to harvest rice, and participate in a cooking class to end the day.
We pedaled past rice farmers working in their fields, spotted water buffalo (including some seriously cute babies!), and saw ponds covered in blooming lotus flowers. It was just so beautiful.
One little tip: If it’s been raining, maybe don’t wear your favorite shoes and clothes. The paths can get a bit muddy, but honestly, that just adds to the adventure!

Phong Nha or Ninh Binh: The Verdict
So, you’re trying to decide between Phong Nha and Ninh Binh? Both are stunning, but offer different experiences. Hopefully, this breakdown helps you choose!
Transportation & Accessibility – Phong Nha or Ninh Binh?
Winner: Ninh Binh
- Ninh Binh is the clear winner for accessibility. It’s only a 2-hour bus ride from Hanoi, making it one of the easiest destinations to reach in Vietnam.
- You can also get to Ninh Binh directly from Cat Ba Island (4-hour bus & ferry) or Da Nang (14-16 hour train).
- Phong Nha takes longer to reach. It’s a (minimum) 6 hour ride from both Hanoi (coming from the North) and Hoi An (coming from the South) and buses often arrive in the middle of the night.
If you’re short on time or want a quick getaway from Hanoi, Ninh Binh is the better choice.
