This meant we could put that money towards better accommodation elsewhere, like Tam Coc, and hand-tailored clothes in Hoi An, where we got far more value for our budget.

Our Beka Travel Budget Cruise Experience

We met at the Beka Travel office (you can also be picked up from your accommodation), where we were given an overview of the day’s itinerary. 

From there, we hopped on a bus that took us to the port, where we boarded our boat and set off to cruise through Halong Bay. 

What It’s Like On Board the Beka Travel Boat

The views were just as awe-inspiring as we’d imagined. Our guide pointed out various islands with historic and cultural significance during the first couple of hours.

After soaking in the scenery from the top deck, we arrived at our first stop—kayaking! We paired up and spent the next two hours kayaking through coves and caves.

At one point, we paddled through a cave that led to a beautiful, sheltered area where we could jump into the water, explore, or just relax in our kayaks and take it all in.

Once we returned to the boat, it was time for lunch—hands down the best meal we’ve had on any excursion in Southeast Asia. The spread was incredible: oysters, papaya salad, pho, and more. 

Honestly, we’d book this excursion again just for that feast. After lunch, we cruised slowly back to the port.

Along the way, we stopped at an island to swim and visited a fish farm, where we learned about traditional fishing methods, the local fishermen’s lifestyle, and the sustainability of the industry.

Our Experience Getting to Halong Bay

We traveled from Sapa to Cat Ba on an overnight sleeper bus and the experience was ok. 

The bus itself was great, but we had a 5 am stopover in Hanoi with a wait and bus change.

Unless you’re traveling to Halong Bay directly from Hanoi this can’t be helped but just be aware that it can be a long travel day!
