One of the highlights of our trip, cycling through the lush rice fields around Tam Coc offers a glimpse into the region’s rural life.
Riding through these areas, you’ll pass local farmers tending their crops, spot peaceful water buffalo (sometimes with adorable babies!), and enjoy the sight of ponds filled with blooming lotus flowers.

Hike Up to Hang Mua Cave + Viewpoint
Your next stop is Hang Mua Cave, known for its scenic viewpoint reached by a tough but rewarding 500-step climb.
From the top, you’ll be treated to panoramic views of the countryside, with endless green rice fields stretching beneath you.

If you’re visiting Tam Coc from late May to July, don’t miss the Lotus Garden, where lotus flowers are in full bloom.

If you need another coffee, or if you skipped the Lotus Garden, get a caffeine boost before biking too much further at Nhật Linh en route to Bich Dong Pagoda.
This café has seating overlooking beautiful rice fields and limestone cliffs, making it an ideal spot to take a break before continuing your journey.

Admire Bich Dong Pagoda
Bich Dong Pagoda is a must-see, built into a limestone mountain with a series of scenic levels and caves to explore.

One of Ninh Binh’s lesser-known treasures, Thung Nham Bird Valley is perfect for an afternoon ride.
The entry point is about 2 km from the main gate, and once inside, you’ll spend around two hours exploring on bike and by boat.
Entry Fee: 150,000 VND ($6 USD), which includes boat rides within the park.
TOP TIP: For the best bird-watching, plan to visit either early in the morning or around 4 PM, when you can see birds returning to the wetlands.
Get Pampered at a Local Salon
After a day of biking, treat yourself to some pampering at a local salon – this stop is for everyone, not just the girls!

While getting around Tam Coc is mostly fun and games, there are still a few things that will be helpful to know.
How to Rent a Bike for Your Self-Guided Tour
Renting a bicycle in Tam Coc is easy, with many guesthouses and rental shops around town offering bikes for free or a small fee, usually between 40,000-60,000 VND ($1.50-$3 USD) per day.
If your accommodation doesn’t have rentals, they’ll likely know where to find one nearby.
Safety on Your Bike
We weren’t given helmets with our bikes, and we didn’t see many other people wearing them either. It’s obviously safer to ride with one, but in Tam Coc that isn’t always the norm when renting a bicycle.
Parts of the Tam Coc bicycle route are on roads shared with cars and motorbikes.
Traffic is generally light, but if riding alongside vehicles makes you uncomfortable, you might prefer to walk shorter sections or take a taxi instead.
Best Time of Day for Biking Around Tam Coc
Get up and at ’em in the morning to take advantage of the cooler temps. It’s at least a two hour route, so it will definitely warm up as you go.
We tried to take a long lunch break to escape the peak heat of the day before heading over to Thung Nham Bird Park in the afternoon for golden hour.
Seasonality and Weather in Tam Coc
We don’t recommend visiting Vietnam during rainy season at all, but if you are going to — or you’re traveling in the shoulder months when there’s a bit more rain — be prepared to get a little muddy.
We visited in April, which is solidly high and dry season, and it still rained a couple of times during our six day stay.
We definitely ended up muddy. Keep that in mind when you’re picking out your outfit for the day.

Can you do this if you’re only in the area half a day?
Not really. Ninh Binh is just far enough to be inconvenient for a day trip from Hanoi, so you wouldn’t really have time to see much.
If you want to see some of the places on the bike route in one day, we recommend booking a guided tour instead so you can hit the ground running (or biking…) when you arrive.

We think so. If you have the time and ability, Tam Coc is accessible enough to enjoy the freedom of biking around on your own.
