When we first arrived in Ninh Binh, we faced the same dilemma most travelers do: should we stay in Trang An or Tam Coc?

On paper, they look similar – stunning rice fields, dramatic limestone cliffs, peaceful rivers – but the vibe of each couldn’t be more different.

As budget travelers who care more about cultural experiences than nightlife, we decided to explore both.

We stayed in a family-run guesthouse in Tam Coc, joined boat rides, sampled the food, and biked through the rice fields of both Trang An and Tam Coc.

In this guide, we’ll share what we discovered. We’ll compare location, price, food, atmosphere, and boat rides to help you decide which area is best for your travel style – plus our favorite budget-friendly places to stay in both.

If you only have time for one, most travelers prefer staying in Tam Coc (in town) for the convenience. But if you want to be surrounded by mountains and rice fields, you should pick Trang An.

We go through the pros and cons of each, plus our favorite places to stay below!

Trang An vs Tam Coc: Key Differences

Before deciding where to stay, it’s important to understand the difference between Trang An, Tam Coc, and Ninh Binh.

This confused us at first because many people say they’re visiting Ninh Binh when they actually mean Tam Coc. 

Tam Coc is a small town in Ninh Binh Province, close to the actual city of Ninh Binh but far quieter and more scenic. Trang An is an area near Tam Coc, famous for its serene landscapes and boat tours. 

While Ninh Binh City is primarily a transit hub, Tam Coc and Trang An are the places to stay if you’re looking to experience the beauty of the region.

To help you get an overview quickly, here’s a side-by-side comparison of Trang An vs Tam Coc and which area we think wins for each category.

Location & Accessibility: Which Base Works Best?

Tam Coc is a compact town where everything is within walking distance. 

It’s easy to bike to nearby attractions like Hang Mua Viewpoint or Trang An from here. Staying in Tam Coc means you’ll have quick access to restaurants, ATMs, and other amenities.

Trang An is more remote, offering a tranquil escape from the tourist hustle. 

However, staying here means you’ll need a bike or motorbike to access dining options and activities outside your accommodation.

Food & Eating on a Budget

Tam Coc offers a variety of dining options, including local Vietnamese cuisine, Western dishes, and even Indian food. 

You won’t have to worry about finding a good place to eat. We write about all of our very favorite places to eat in Tam Coc here.

Trang An dining is limited to what’s available at or near your accommodation.  If you don’t mind biking or riding into Tam Coc for meals, this won’t be a problem. A Summary of Pros and Cons: Trang An vs Tam Coc

Tam Coc is centered around a tourist street, which can be both a pro and a con. 

It’s bustling but easy to escape. A short bike ride takes you into the quiet countryside, making it possible to enjoy both convenience and solitude.

Trang An offers true seclusion, surrounded by limestone karsts and lush greenery. 

It’s ideal if you prioritize peace and natural beauty over easy access to amenities. 

We will say that we stayed in Tam Coc during our visit and still found it very quiet. The real benefit of staying in Trang An is the incredible nature that surrounds your accommodation.

Cost of Staying: Accommodation Pricing

There isn’t much difference in accommodation prices between Trang An and Tam Coc. 

Both areas offer a range of options, from budget homestays to luxurious resorts. Your choice will likely come down to location and personal preference rather than cost.

Boat Rides: Which Experience is Better?

One of the most famous activities in Ninh Binh is taking a boat ride through the region’s breathtaking waterways. Both Trang An and Tam Coc offer boat tours, but they have some differences:

Trang An Boat Ride:

• Longer, more serene, and less crowded.
• Features dramatic limestone karsts and historical sites.
• A better choice if you’re looking for a peaceful and immersive experience.
• You’ll need to take a taxi or bicycle there yourself if you’re not staying in Trang An.
• The rowers do not use their feet here, so you will miss out on this traditional rowing.

TOP TIP: If you want to see traditional foot rowing, but plan to pick the Trang An boat ride, there are plenty of cafes in Tam Coc where you can see the foot rowers pass by. We liked Coffee Lan right on the water.

Tam Coc Boat Ride:

• Known for its rice paddies and caves.
• Shorter and slightly busier, as it’s closer to town.
• Ideal if you’re looking for a picturesque ride through lush countryside.
• Traditional foot rowing is used in Tam Coc, so pick this ride if you want to experience this first-hand.
• Known for the rowers and sellers harassing customers, so this is a con for us.

Over all, the choice is up to you as you can pick either boat ride no matter where you decide to stay! 

TOP TIP: Whichever boat ride you pick, arrive at the ticket gate right when it opens. This way you’ll beat all the tour buses and most of the crowds to enjoy the trip at its most peaceful. They both cost about the same – 250,000 VND or $10 USD.

Getting In and Out (Transport Connections)

In Tam Coc, buses drop you off and pick you up on the main street, making transport convenient. 

If you’re staying here, you can walk or bike to most attractions.

For Trang An, since buses don’t stop here, you’ll need to arrange a taxi or walk with your bags from Tam Coc. 

This adds a small cost and effort to your stay in Trang An.

Take into account what time you’ll be arriving and your energy levels. This often influences our decision on whether we’re willing to walk or add another leg to the journey after arriving. 

If you’re arriving late or feeling tired, staying in Tam Coc might be the more convenient choice. For those who prioritize tranquility and don’t mind a bit of extra effort, Trang An can be a rewarding option.

Best Budget Guesthouses in Trang An

Nature Garden Ecolodge Ninh Bình – the only way to describe this place is exceptional. Beautifully designed rooms, curated gardens, and a stunning pool surrounded by our favorite scenery in Vietnam.

This is true luxury on a budget (like $50USD a night for an actual resort?!). We can’t wait to stay here next time we visit.

Trang An Retreat Ninh Binh – is a fantastic mid-range option if you prefer a more secluded experience, away from the main tourist spots, with serene mountain views. 

Enjoy the pool, take a short walk to the Trang An boat tour, and savor the delicious on-site meals. Some scooters and bikes are also available for rent to help you explore more of the area.

Trang An River View Homestay – is set right on the river and is surrounded by amazing rice fields and mountains, plus breakfast is included in your stay.

The staff here is super kind and helpful and the rooms clean. This is definitely a great budget guesthouse option. 

Best Budget Hostels in Trang An

Trang An Freedom Hood – is an ideal option if you’re open to staying a bit outside of town. The views are incredible, and the guesthouse itself is lovely. 

With both dorms and private rooms available to suit different budgets and preferences, and bikes for rent to get into town, it’s a great pick!

Best Budget Guesthouses in Tam Coc

Tam Coc Lotus Flower Homestay – is where we stayed and we couldn’t recommend it more. Our host, Lin, was incredibly accommodating and prepared a delicious breakfast for us every morning. 

Her lush garden is filled with whimsical mini figurines, and the rooms are spotless. This place offers amazing value for your stay.

Tam Coc Windy Fields – is a little outside of town, but we’d still consider it as Tam Coc. The pool is the real star of the show here, set right on the rice fields surrounding the guesthouse.

Best Budget Hostels in Tam Coc

The Banana Tree Hostel – is the most popular hostel in Tam Coc – and for good reason. 

The vibe is fantastic, the property is beautiful, and it’s located right in the heart of town. For around $11 USD per night, it offers everything you could want in a hostel.

Tam Coc Bungalow – lets you enjoy the amenities of a small guest house at the price of a dorm bed. 

Located right on the water in Tam Coc, you’re far enough from town to enjoy some peace and quiet, but close enough to walk to dinner and other activities. 

Tam Coc Rice Fields Homestay – is another great option for a hostel in Tam Coc. 

There is an 8-bed dorm, but also very affordable private rooms if you want some privacy, but still enjoy a social hostel atmosphere.

Practical Travel Tips for Trang An & Tam Coc

Getting to Ninh Binh (from Hanoi, Cat Ba, Sapa, Phong Nha)

Tam Coc is an easy stop to add to your Vietnam backpacking route, especially if you’re already exploring northern or central Vietnam.

Remember, you’ll have to add some walking, a motorbike rental or a taxi onto these routes if you’re staying in Trang An.

Here’s how to get here from some of the most popular spots:

Hanoi to Tam Coc

This is the simplest and fastest route.

• Train: The Reunification Express runs from Hanoi to Ninh Binh in about 2–2.5 hours. From Ninh Binh, it’s a quick 15-minute taxi or motorbike ride to Tam Coc.
• Bus: You can book a direct bus to Tam Coc, which takes around 2 hours. 

TOP TIP: Look for services like Good Morning Cat Ba or Ninh Binh Excursion – they’re reliable and drop you off right in the area. You can book these on 12Go. 

Cat Ba/Ha Long to Tam Coc

Traveling from Cat Ba or Ha Long Bay is a little more involved but still straightforward. This is the route we took and we had no problems.

• Book a bus in advance and you will either be picked up at your accommodation or meet the bus at a designated point.
• The bus will take you straight off the island, onto the ferry (either on the bus or by foot), and direct to Tam Coc, and will take around 4-5 hours.

TOP TIP: This is a super common journey so you can book a bus on 12Go, with your accommodation, or an agency in town. We booked with the agency we cruised Ha Long Bay with.

Sapa to Tam Coc

If you’re coming from Sapa, this is still an easy journey, but it will be a long one.

• Train: Take the night train from Lao Cai (the closest station to Sapa) to Ninh Binh. It’s about an 8–9 hour ride and a comfortable option if you want to save on accommodation.
• Sleeper Bus: Direct sleeper buses run between Sapa and Ninh Binh, taking around 9–10 hours.

Phong Nha to Tam Coc

Traveling from Phong Nha usually involves an overnight trip. We took this trip in reverse, heading to Phong Nha after Ninh Binh.

• Bus: Direct night buses from Phong Nha to Ninh Binh are the easiest option and take about 8–10 hours.
• Train: If you’d rather take the train, head to Dong Hoi (about an hour from Phong Nha) and catch a train to Ninh Binh, then a taxi to Tam Coc or Trang An. The whole trip takes 9–11 hours.

Budget-Friendly Travel Tips

• Take boat rides early in the morning to avoid crowds and enjoy cooler weather.
• Be prepared for muddy paths if you’re biking, especially during the rainy season.
• Plan to stay at least three to five days to fully enjoy the area’s activities and relaxed pace.
• If you’re staying in Trang An, remember to bring cash to pay for your accommodation, as you won’t find an ATM outside Tam Coc.
• Bike parking is available at most attractions, but bring a lock for added security and ignore the “attendants” offering parking before the official attraction. 

Things to Do Beyond Your Guesthouse

Cycling Through the Rice Fields

Rent a bike and ride through the lush countryside of Tam Coc on a self-guided route. Along the way, you’ll pass rice paddies, water buffalo, and lotus-filled ponds. 

If it’s been raining, be prepared for some muddy paths—it’s all part of the adventure!

Bird Watch at Thung Nham Bird Valley

Visit this peaceful nature reserve for birdwatching and boat rides. Entrance costs 150K VND and includes all boat tours within the park. 

TOP TIP: The best time to see flocks of birds is early morning or just before dusk. We arrived around 3pm, but arrive even earlier if you’d like to explore the park before birdwatching. 

Visiting Bich Dong Pagoda

This stunning pagoda, nestled against a limestone mountain, features multiple levels with breathtaking views. Entry is free, though bike parking costs 10-20K VND. Climb to the top for incredible scenery.

Pamper Yourself at a Salon

Get a relaxing hair wash and head massage for about $3 USD at any salon in Tam Coc. For massages and herbal baths, visit Sense Spa Tam Coc for a truly amazing experience.
