12 Best Things to Do in Phong Nha (Caves, Countryside & Motorbike Adventures)
Phong Nha wasn’t even on our original Vietnam itinerary. It wasn’t until other travelers in Hanoi raved about the incredible caves and countryside that we decided to check it out.
We’re so glad we did! With its dramatic karst mountains, riverside charm, and laid-back vibe, Phong Nha is one of the most scenic places we visited in Vietnam – and best explored by motorbike.
This guide covers the best things to do in Phong Nha, plus tips on where to stay, where to eat, and how to get there.

Best Things to Do in Phong Nha
Even though the caves get most of the attention there’s way more to Phong Nha than just what’s underground. From lazy rivers and jungle hikes to quirky local stops, here’s everything we loved (and think you’ll love too).
Explore the Famous Caves
1. Cruise Inside Phong Nha Caves
Enjoy a serene boat ride along the Son River to the cave’s entrance, then marvel at its impressive stalactites and stalagmites.
Boat tickets cost 550,000 VND (split among up to 12 people) plus an entry fee of 150,000 VND per person, and it departs from the village boat dock.
We watched tour groups float down the river to Phong Nha Caves all day from our riverside accommodation at Little Rock Homestay.
📌 Another of our favorite caves in Southeast Asia was Kong Lor Cave in Laos. Make sure you don’t miss it if you’re heading that way.
2. Marvel at Paradise Cave
Walk 1 km inside the longest dry cave in Asia, surrounded by jaw-dropping formations lit up in vibrant colors.
Entry is 250,000 VND, and it’s about 20 km from the village – accessible via motorbike or organized tours.
3. Venture into Dark Cave (Zipline + Mud Bath)
After ziplining across the river, swim into the cave to enjoy a playful mud bath and explore the dark depths with headlamps.
Entry with the full adventure package costs around 450,000 VND, and you can reach it via scooter or a local tour.
👉 If you want to make the most of your time, or you only have one day with a motorbike, many tours combine Dark Cave and Paradise Cave in one tour.

4. Hike Through Phong Nha Botanic Garden
We did no prior research before showing up here (whoops) and assumed Phong Nha Botanic Garden is just some gardens to explore. This couldn’t be further from the truth!
These “gardens” are actually a protected wild area with different trails, waterfalls, and swimming holes to explore.
Wander along peaceful trails lined with diverse plants and small waterfalls, or hike up to Gio Waterfall for stunning views.
Entry costs around 40,000 VND, and it’s located about 12 km from Phong Nha village – easily accessible by motorbike.
Exploring the waterfalls in Phong Nha Botanic Gardens was one of the highlights of our stay in Phong Nha!
If you don’t plan on renting a motorbike, this tour brings you to the Botanic Gardens (+ Paradise Cave for a mud bath and zipline).
5. Cool Off at Mooc Spring
Swim in the turquoise waters, walk across bamboo bridges, or simply relax surrounded by limestone cliffs.
Entry is 80,000 VND, and it’s a 30-minute ride from Phong Nha town. There are small food stalls nearby for snacks and drinks.
6. Take a Jungle Night Walk Through the Rainforest
We didn’t get the chance to do this one, but it’s high on our list for next time. The Hidden Jungle Night Walk is the only nighttime wildlife tour in Phong Nha, and it sounds like a dream for nature lovers.
You’ll head out with local guides to spot owls, frogs, glowing insects, and all sorts of nocturnal jungle life.

7. Explore Phong Nha–Ke Bang National Park by Motorbike (or Join a Trekking Tour)
Riding around the edges of Phong Nha–Ke Bang National Park was one of our favorite days in Vietnam.
The roads wind through farmland, limestone peaks, and dense jungle – and even without venturing deep into the park, the views are stunning.
It’s the perfect day trip if you’ve got a motorbike and want a taste of the wild side of Phong Nha.
For those who want to go deeper into the park (literally), we recommend joining a guided trek instead. The one we’d pick is…
👉 Phong Nha Trek to Elephant & Tra Ang Cave with Swim in Ma Da Valley – a full-day adventure that includes:
- Trekking about 9 km through the jungle
- Exploring Elephant Cave, used during wartime
- Swimming across Ma Da Lake and into Tra Ang Water Cave
- A riverside BBQ lunch and hotel pickup from Phong Nha or Dong Hoi
It’s a great mix of hiking, swimming, and caving – no huge crowds, just nature at its best. Tours are around 2,000,000 VND and include all safety gear and guides who know the park inside out.
If we’d had more time (we had a flight out of Vietnam!), this is exactly the tour we would’ve booked.
8. Paddle Board or Kayak at Ozo Park Ecotourism Zone
Get off the tourist trail and visit Ozo Park, a hidden gem along the main motorbike loop. This spot feels like a local favorite – we didn’t see any other tourists!

Admission costs 200K VND ($8 USD), and it includes access to a variety of activities like zip lining across the river, paddleboarding, swimming, kayaking, and strolling through a treetop walk.
We spent a few hours kayaking and paddleboarding here, soaking in the peaceful surroundings – it was the perfect way to unwind before heading back to town for dinner.
TOP TIP: Eat lunch before you go to Ozo Park. We assumed there would be affordable options inside, but, while delicious, lunch here was the most expensive meal we had in Vietnam.
Local Experiences and Chill Spots in Phong Nha
9. Feed Ducks at The Duck Stop
Feed ducks, take part in a quirky “duck massage,” and enjoy a free pancake with coffee or juice from a friendly local family.
It’s just 10 km from town, or a tuk-tuk ride costs around 50,000 VND each way. Donations are encouraged, but there’s no set fee.
10. Try Unique Local Foods
The food in Phong Nha surprised us in the best way.
Sample local specialties like wild vegetable stir-fries, banh xeo pancakes, and tangy river fish cooked in clay pots.
Meals will typically cost 50,000–100,000 VND, which is standard prices in Vietnam.

11. Grab a Beer on Main Street
Sip on a cold Bia Hoi (our fav) or try a cocktail at a lively bar like Easy Tiger or Bamboo Café, where both backpackers and locals hang out.
Drinks start at 20,000 VND, and most spots stay open until late evening.
12. Swim in the River
Beat the heat with a refreshing dip in the Son River! We swam in the river next to our homestay (floaties included!) but you can also jump in near the Phong Nha boat dock or local riverside cafes.
It’s free to swim, but keep an eye out for calm spots away from boat traffic.
Where to Eat in Phong Nha
Bamboo Chopsticks Restaurant – MUST VISIT
This busy little spot in Phong Nha town is an absolute gem.
If you go, you have to order the caramel tofu – it’s hands-down some of the best food we had in Vietnam. The flavor is unreal, and we haven’t found anything quite like it anywhere else.
We also tried the creamy cashew chicken, and it did not disappoint. The staff here are super friendly and happy to recommend dishes if you’re stuck on what to choose.
If you’re in Phong Nha, don’t skip this place!
Cháo Sáng Toàn Huế – A HIDDEN GEM
A short walk from Little Rock Homestay, we stumbled across this tiny spot with a few tables set up outside someone’s house.
We sat down and asked for “two noodles,” not knowing exactly what we’d get – but that’s half the fun, right?
They brought out steaming bowls of crab noodles with a side of the freshest spring rolls we’ve ever had – no joke, the girl who served us was sitting right there rolling them by hand as we ate.
The menu changes daily, so just show up, grab a seat, and order whatever they’re serving. It’s simple, delicious, and so worth it. Here’s the link to find it on Google Maps.
Where to Stay in Phong Nha
Little Rock Homestay – OUR PICK
We decided to stay a little out of the town and enjoy a few days of peace and quiet at Little Rock. The homestay is directly on the river, with access for swimming and sunbathing by the water.
The rooms were amazing, going above and beyond our expectations. The building is newly renovated, with a fresh feel and lots of natural light.
The owner arranged a motorbike for us so we could head into town for dinner, explore the beautiful National Park, and cover all the best things to do in Phong Nha.
She even picked us up at 3AM (!!!) when our bus arrived in the middle of the night from Ninh Binh.
She was very helpful, and made a delicious FREE breakfast each morning. When we left, she drove us into town and made sure we got on the right bus to Hue.

Central Backpackers Hostel – BUDGET
The hostel is in a good location, serving as the arrival/departure point for most buses to and from Phong Nha.
We didn’t stay here, but we heard that the staff are friendly from other travelers. They are happy to help you organize trips, and recommend things to do in Phong Nha.
The dorm rooms have comfortable beds and are fitted with air conditioning and fans.
The biggest (almost) selling point for us has to be the large swimming pool with spectacular mountain views. The hostel also offers a free BBQ on Sundays, and lots of activities in the evening.
We’ll definitely consider staying here next time we’re in Phong Nha.
How to Get to Phong Nha
Phong Nha is super accessible from both Northern and Southern Vietnam. Stopping in Phong Nha is a great way to break up long travel days between major cities.
Many travelers find themselves choosing between Phong Nha and Ninh Binh, as both destinations offer stunning landscapes and outdoor adventures.

Hanoi to Phong Nha
You can take a 10-12 hour bus from Hanoi to Phong Nha. This is probably your cheapest option, and most bus companies offer hotel pick-up/drop-off.
Alternatively, take the train to Dong Hoi, then a one hour bus or taxi to Phong Nha. Travel time is still 10-12 hours, and the train is more expensive.

Dong Hoi to Phong Nha
The local bus from Dong Hoi will be your cheapest option to get to Phong Nha. The journey takes 45 minutes to 1 hour.
TOP TIP: You can’t book this journey online. Have your accommodation help you, or just show up at the bus station.
Taxis between the two destinations aren’t too expensive, split between a full car, if you’re happy to pay a little extra for a more comfortable and faster journey.
Hue to Phong Nha
There are regular buses between Hue and Phong Nha with a travel time of 4-5 hours. Similarly to Hanoi, you could also take the train from Hue to Dong Hoi, then from there jump in a bus or taxi to Phong Nha.
The train journey will take 5-6 hours, so your quickest and most affordable option is the bus.
Da Nang to Phong Nha
The bus runs from Da Nang to Phong Nha daily, taking 4.5-6 hours. Trains take a little longer at 6-7 hours, and involve transferring from Dong Hoi to Phong Nha.

Hoi An to Phong Nha
The most budget friendly option for this 7-8 hour drive is an overnight bus from Hoi An to Phong Nha. The buses are comfortable and affordable, and are often cheaper than the train.
If you’d rather take the train, bear in mind you will need to first take a bus from Hoi An to Da Nang, then the train to Dong Hoi, then a taxi to Phong Nha. Total travel time is about 8-10 hours.

How Many Days Should I Spend in Phong Nha?
If you just want to see the highlights, you could spend 1-2 days seeing all the main things to do in Phong Nha.
However, to explore the National Park further, and fully immerse yourself in the peaceful atmosphere, we recommend staying for 3-4 days.
When is the Best Time to Visit Phong Nha?
The best time to visit Phong Nha is between February and August during the dry season. Should you visit in the rainy season between October and February, be aware of flooding.
Although the severity of flooding varies from year to year, being in Phong Nha during these months may greatly impact your stay. Especially since most people go to Phong Nha for the caves, which may be inaccessible in the case of heavy rainfall.
Is Phong Nha Worth Visiting?
Absolutely! With a visit to Phong Nha you’ll be treated to the world’s largest cave, diverse landscapes, tranquil beauty and thrilling adventures.
The people are friendly, the food is some of the best in the country, and Phong Nha is the perfect escape from the hectic Vietnamese cities.
We almost didn’t stop here, but we are SO glad we did. It’s a village we will definitely come back to visit again.
