Everything you need is just a short walk away, from restaurants and shops to tour offices that organize tubing, kayaking, and caving adventures.
We’ll admit that Vang Vieng wasn’t our favorite stop in Laos since adventure sports aren’t really our scene, but it’s still absolutely worth a visit.
The scenery is breathtaking, and even if you’re not into paramotoring or tubing, there’s a peaceful side to the town that’s easy to fall in love with.
The area offers a wide range of Vang Vieng accommodation, from cheap guesthouses to stylish boutique resorts, making it easy to find something that fits your budget.
The key is choosing wisely, since some streets stay peaceful at night while others are home to lively hostels and bars that can get noisy.

We always look for spots with social areas but proper quiet hours — a few newer places cater to mindful backpackers who want connection without chaos.
To be honest though, there aren’t actually any hostels in Vang Vieng that we’d stay in as a 30+ year old couple.
IMPORTANT: Avoid Vang Vieng Central Backpacker Hostel, formerly known as Nana Backpacker Hostel, which was previously linked to methanol poisoning deaths, but still denies any wrongdoing.

We always say that the next time we visit Laos, we want to do it with a bigger budget so we can experience staying in luxury resorts. This is the place we’d choose in Vang Vieng.
Riverside Boutique Resort is, in our opinion, the only place in Vang Vieng that truly feels like a resort.
The rooms are gorgeous—spacious, comfortable, and spotless—with a beautiful riverside location that makes it hard to leave.
Food at the on-site restaurant is fresh and delicious, and breakfasts are just as impressive, with a huge spread that includes excellent pastries. The spa is also well-priced and genuinely good.

6. Sky Hotel
Sky Hotel is a great option if you’re after a bit more comfort without splurging on FULL luxury.

7. Bearlinbungalow – Our Top Pick
If you’re staying on the far side of the river, make it Bearlinbungalow. This place is stylish, clean, and has killer views from the pool and breakfast area.
You’re a bit out of town, but the Wi-Fi is solid, and renting a bike (or a motorbike if you know what you’re doing) is easy.
There are only six bungalows, so it never feels crowded, and the on-site restaurant is well-priced. Plus, a handful of small restaurants and viewpoints are just a short walk away.
We definitely wish we’d known about this spot when we visited!

8. Vang Vieng Nature Guesthouse
A great value stay, Vang Vieng Nature Guesthouse is set right in the rice fields but only a 15 min walk from Vang Vieng town. Enjoy new, clean rooms, excellent service, and mountain views from your room.

Side note: We don’t recommend renting a motorbike in Vang Vieng unless you’re a confident rider. The roads are full of potholes and thick dust, and we saw (and got stuck behind in a tuktuk) plenty of nervous backpackers bumping along.

Hot Air Ballooning in Vang Vieng
Honestly, this is the reason we came to Vang Vieng — and it did not disappoint. Julia surprised Jess with a sunset ride for her birthday (sunrise was already sold out three weeks before our trip).
Floating over the karst mountains as the sun dipped behind them was pure magic.
TOP TIP: Book early. The best (and safest) companies sell out fast. And plan to stay at least two nights so you’ve got a buffer in case weather cancels your ride.

Swim at Blue Lagoon 3
There are a few Blue Lagoons around town, but after some research, we landed at Blue Lagoon 3.
There’s a restaurant, rope swing, and plenty of floaties to laze around on. You can even hike up to a cave above the lagoon for a little bonus adventure.
The water is incredible. It’s a bit chilly, but the turquoise color is amazing. You can take a tuktuk there that will wait for you while you swim.
If you’re on a budget, try to find other travelers to split the cost with.
TOP TIP: Go in the morning before the sun dips behind the cliffs — the shade turns that refreshing dip into a cold plunge pretty quick. We made this mistake and were somehow almost cold even in the Laos heat.
Watch the Sunset
One of our favorite moments in Vang Vieng was actually the simplest. We found this little local field across the river (location here), surrounded by the limestone cliffs the town’s famous for.
The owner set out mats and sold Beer Lao and soft drinks — nothing fancy, just good vibes and a golden sunset.

As one of the most visited spots in Laos, Vang Vieng is pretty easy to reach. Most travelers come from Luang Prabang or Vientiane, so here’s our take on the best options from both.
Getting to Vang Vieng from Luang Prabang
You can get to Vang Vieng from Luang Prabang by bus or train. But PLEASE take our advice. If you can, pay a little extra for the train—and BOOK EARLY.

Bus from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng
The bus ride from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng takes over six hours along winding cliff-edge roads with no railings, occasional landslides, and drivers who think overtaking massive trucks while texting is fun.
This is not our kind of adventure.
We accidentally took this route ourselves because we were traveling during Chinese New Year (not exactly on purpose).
We couldn’t change plans—our hot air balloon ride in Vang Vieng was already booked—so over the mountains we went.
We’ve been on plenty of questionable drives over 10+ years of traveling, but this one? Definitely one of the few times we actually said, out loud, thank god we survived.
Maybe our driver was just extra terrifying, but we can safely say we won’t be doing that ride again anytime soon.

Train from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng
This is the route we wish we could have taken. Instead of a nerve-wracking six-hour drive through mountain passes, you hop on an air-conditioned train and in just one hour, you’re in Vang Vieng.
The train station is a little outside town, but plenty of tuktuks are ready to take you into the main area.

Getting to Vang Vieng from Vientiane (And Vice Versa)
Bus from Vientiane to Vang Vieng
The bus from Vientiane to Vang Vieng isn’t nearly as intense as the one from Luang Prabang.
So if you’re on a budget, taking the bus is totally doable. The ride is only 2–3 hours and, yes, probably still a bit cramped (because what transit in Laos isn’t?), but it won’t be a heart-stopping drive.

Train from Vientiane to Vang Vieng
You can also take the same comfortable, air-conditioned train that runs from Luang Prabang. The ride is just under an hour and far more relaxing than the bus.
Since we missed taking the train from Luang Prabang, we actually took it from Vang Vieng to Vientiane just so we could experience it—and we’re glad we did.
We always love the train for the scenery too. Since it sticks to its own tracks away from the main roads, you get to see countryside landscapes you wouldn’t catch from a bus or minivan.
