Where We Booked Our Hot Air Balloon in Vang Vieng

Taking a hot air balloon in Vang Vieng is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and after researching all the options, we decided to book with Above Laos.

Known for being the cheapest place in the world for a hot air balloon ride, Vang Vieng offers unbeatable views, but not all operators provide the same level of service or safety.

After comparing reviews, safety records, and communication, Above Laos stood out as the most reliable choice. Here’s everything you need to know about our experience, how to book, and why it’s worth the splurge.

Above Laos

Our experience with Above Laos was exceptional. Communication was clear and professional via email and text, both the day before and on the day of our ride.

We were picked up directly from our guesthouse in an air-conditioned van, given detailed instructions on what to expect, and received a thorough safety briefing in English before takeoff.

Once at the site, we were assigned to a balloon and climbed into the basket one by one. The entire process was handled professionally, and we felt safe throughout the flight.

After landing, we were treated to snacks, a glass of champagne, and a commemorative certificate. The experience was seamless, comfortable, and unforgettable. We’d wholeheartedly recommend booking with Above Laos!!

Why We Chose Above Laos

Three Laotian men are working in deflating a red and yellow hot air balloon in Vang Vieng after it landed at the end of the flight. Two of the men are in the basket and the other is standing next to the balloon.

Safety and professionalism were our top priorities, and Above Laos delivered on both fronts. The company, owned by a French team based in Laos, complies with international safety standards.

They use European equipment that undergoes regular inspections, and all their pilots are certified. For us, it was also a special occasion—a 30th birthday gift for Jess – so we opted for a premium experience.

How Much Our Ride Cost

Our hot air balloon ride cost $145 USD per person. While this might seem steep, it’s incredibly reasonable given the professionalism, safety measures, and unique experience offered by Above Laos.

Without a doubt, this was one of the coolest experiences we’ve ever had.

While $145 for a 45-minute ride is a splurge for budget travelers, the combination of stunning views, safety, and an unforgettable adventure made it worth every penny.

Though we didn’t love every aspect of Vang Vieng (read more about that here), the hot air balloon ride made the stop worthwhile.

Why We Don’t Recommend Street Bookings

While it’s possible to book a ride once you arrive in Vang Vieng, we strongly advise against it. We spoke with several backpackers who had negative experiences with budget operators.

Complaints included:

  • Children handling balloon ropes.
  • Delayed takeoffs, missing sunrise or sunset views.
  • Overcrowded baskets.
  • No safety briefing.

Hot air ballooning is not an activity to take lightly—a poorly managed ride can be dangerous. Always choose a reputable operator to prioritize safety.
